Northeast India Heritage Festival

Held on September 2025 | Columbus, Ohio

About the Northeast India Heritage Festival

The Northeast India Heritage Festival created an inclusive and collaborative platform to celebrate the rich cultural traditions of India’s Seven Sisters and One Brother. The festival emerged from our ongoing research project, Musical Instruments of Northeastern India: Collection, Preservation, and Documentation, which generated international interest and underscored the urgency of safeguarding these artistic legacies. Building on this foundation, the festival became a successful model for heritage preservation, diaspora engagement, and Indo-American cultural diplomacy.

Uniting people through vibrant festivals rooted in heritage.

The Festival in Retrospect

The two-day event featured a wide-ranging program highlighting the tradition, creativity, and communities of Northeast India.
Cultural Performances
Live performances formed the heart of the festival, offering a layered experience of tradition in motion. The program featured Borgeet, folk songs and folk dances of various tribes and states, poetry recitation including Guru Pratishtha, a Manipuri dance and a jazz performance. Across disciplines and generations, performers carried forward legacies shaped by mentorship, devotion and lived experience, demonstrating how tradition adapts while remaining deeply rooted.
Artisans and Craft Exhibits

A key highlight of the festival was the presence of authentic handcrafted products from some of the most remote regions of Northeast India. These included handwoven bags from the Sherdukpen community of Arunachal Pradesh, traditional attire from the Tripuri community, designer handbags made from water hyacinth from Manipur, and indigenous fabrics crafted from banana fiber, bamboo, Muga silk, and Eri or Eriandi non-violent silk.

Rare weaves and indigenous motifs reflected sustainable, community-based craftsmanship. Attendees were able to purchase directly from community representatives, supporting artisan livelihoods while increasing visibility for these traditions.

Photo Exhibitions and Visual Storytelling
Curated and sponsored by Discover India’s Northeast, the region’s leading travel and culture magazine, the photo exhibitions offered visual insight into the region’s landscapes and communities. Displays included cultural maps, festivals, sacred sites, traditional costumes, tribal practices, eco and adventure tourism locations, community life, and World War II memorials, creating a layered narrative of history, resilience, and place.
Handloom and Handicraft Marketplace

The festival’s central hall was transformed into a vibrant marketplace showcasing Northeast India’s textile heritage. Community members modeled and presented traditional attire, jewelry, and regional textiles, turning the space into a living exhibition. This interactive setting allowed participants to reconnect with their roots while introducing wider audiences to the craftsmanship and cultural significance of the region’s handloom traditions.

Publications, Panels, and Presentations

The festival featured panel discussions, lectures, and presentations focused on tourism, commerce, sustainability, and cultural preservation. A monograph promoting ecological awareness and heritage conservation in Northeast India was published and distributed during the event, with contributions from Dr. Palme Borthakur, Dr. Utpola Borah, Kishore Seram, and Dr. Hans Utter.

A curated music playlist and documentation of traditional musical instruments were also presented as part of the ongoing research initiative.

Audience Reach and Engagement
The festival welcomed attendees from across 12 U.S. states, including California, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Illinois, Florida, North Carolina, and Michigan. This wide participation underscored the growing global interest in Northeast Indian culture and its relevance within contemporary diasporic and cross-cultural discourse.

Discover India's Northeast

A Message of Gratitude

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the artists, panelists, participants, institutions, and community members from both North America and India who helped make this one-of-a-kind event a success. Organized by Himalayan Folkways and supported by the Greater Columbus Arts Council, Discover India’s Northeast, the Consulate General of India (New York), The Ohio State University, and several local partners, this festival marked North America’s first-ever celebration of Northeast India and its rich cultural heritage.

Note: This festival is entirely independent from the “Northeast Festival” held in Singapore during the same weekend. Our event was planned well in advance and holds no connection to the tragic loss of Zubeen Garg (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zubeen_Garg) or to that festival.
